I'm not 100% certain if it's Atkins friendly or not, since I'm new to this. I do know a lot of diets frown on diet sodas because despite being sugar-free they're just horrible for you. Atkins seems to be more about eating natural and whole foods. Also, all the chemicals and sodium in soda can still hinder weight-loss and a good diet would include no soda of any kind. I'd say one occasionally is okay, but a lot of soda drinkers in genera but diet-soda drinkers especially, tend to over-drink soda which can lead to decreased water-consumption and dehydration. IMO since quitting just diet soda can lead to weight loss, I wouldn't drink it except very occasionally. Also, recent studies have shown that although you are eating artificial sweeteners, your body still perceives it as sugar consumption so eating artificial sweeteners still lead to sugar-cravings. I would worry that'd be more apt to throw my off my diet.

Anyone offer any proof that splenda is stored like normal carbs? My experience has shown it doesnt for me.

I can only speak from my own experience, but Splenda hasn't hindered me at all. I've must started Atkins a week ago and I've already dropped an astounding 16 pounds. In fact, it has helped me not have sugar cravings because I don't feel I'm being completely deprived. But then again, that's just me. Good luck! Wink

It is atkins friendly...I always use splenda...however...some people's bodies can recognize splenda, or a sugar substitute, as a carb and store them likewise...I find I STILL lose weight using splenda, but I just try to limit it..

I've read more up on Atkins since my first reply and the books say Splenda is okay, but Aspartame is not. If I recall correctly, this is because aspartame is carcinogenic and the Atkins diet, like I said, is not only about weight-loss, but over-all health. I'd say the occasionally Splenda-sweetened soda is okay, but don't over to it. And avoid caffeinated sodas as they're restricted on the Atkins diet because caffeine isn't good for you and can interestingly increase your sugar cravings.

Not sure if it were I or someone else that caused the confusion, but I wasn't saying it's stored like carbs, but that your body reacts similarly as it would to sugar and bumps of the sweets cravings even though you were just eating an artificial sweetener.

I love that stuff too. The bigger problem with it is the caffeine, not the artificial sweetener. Caffeine produces an insulin response. I have read that it's ok to have a little caffeine after induction, so as long as you are just having one or two glasses it's probably ok.

I pulled out my copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution and found that "diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda)" is on the approved beverages list.

There is also a note about caffeine:

Quote:

Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.

And one about sweeteners:

Quote:

You must determine which artificial sweeteners agree with you, but the following are allowed: sucralose (marketed at Splenda), saccharin, cyclamate, acesulfame-K. ... We discourage the use of aspartame (marketed as NutraSweet' and Equal).

"There's no doubt that the Atkins diet will lower your cholesterol, weight and blood pressure and get rid of your diabetes, but then what?" asked Dr. Robert Rosati, the cardiologist who runs The Rice Diet Program Clinic, granddaddy of Durham's diet centers.

Not sure how many of you have tried it, but Truvia is a really great sugar substitute. It is made from Stevia leaves and is a natural sugar substitute so much safer than aspertame. I use Truvia in my coffee and can barely taste the difference from real sugar. It has no calories and no carbs. The best part is it really tastes like sugar. Dump some in the palm of your hand and taste it. You can barely tell its not real sugar!

I found this online:
http://www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com/artificial-sweeteners.html

For low carbers, artificial sweeteners often mean the difference between blowing your carb limit for the day, or safely satisfying a sweet craving. However, most powdered forms of fake sweeteners contain some sort of sugar based bulking agent, such as maltodextrin, or dextrose. This adds carbs, so if you use a packet, count it as one carb.

I have lost 50lbs in last 3 months. If I had to put my finger on the one change I made that helped me lose so much weight was... Cutting out all diet soda and artificial sweeteners.

Why? Because my Dietician stated when you trick your body with artificial sweeteners and your body does not get the sugar it was expecting.... guess what... you get hungry again.

The body tells the brain your hungry because it lacks nutrition. When you ingest the things your body is not made for or wanting... you get hungry again. Unfortunately, the body cannot say exactly what your needs are like... I need carbs, or I need protien, or I need vitamin D. It only speaks by releasing a hormone called Ghrelin.

I have done Atkins diet a few times in the past and always lost weight with it; however, I have never been able to keep the weight off. I have known a lot of people who have also done Atkins diet and had the same results. It just seems so easy to shed the weight so fast with less effort. But for me it just seems to squeeze the liquid out of the fat cells like a sponge and the fat cells stay there and just wait for you to go back to a normal diet.

What is different with keto, keto is studied a supercharged low carb diet which ensures you about its maximum benefits. Modern science proves that it works. With the help of the Keto diet, most lose weight without hunger and the number of health issues tends to improve. Keto diet is not used as temporary fixed, many people enjoyed it longterm, old people also used keto to look young and build up tight muscle. Many people used it to feel energetic, full of mental clarity, stable blood sugar level.

I would say they're OK since they have zero carbs.
