Back to School: Start Fall the "Write" Way!
July 29, 2015 / edX team
This summer, learners from across the globe are challenging themselves on edX, learning new skills and exploring new subjects through Summer Learning @ edX. Seasons may change, but there is still always more to learn! Over the coming weeks, we will be transitioning from Summer Learning to our Back to School blog series. From the college admissions process to in-demand career skills, this series will prepare you for a productive autumn! Join us and let's get started. Before heading back to school or the workplace after a long summer vacation, there is one skill you should be sure to brush up on: writing. Sharp writing skills allow us to clearly communicate our thoughts and ideas, and voice our opinions through the art of prose. But did you also know that there is a strong correlation between writing skills, hire-ability, and salary? Check out the infographic on the right from Grammarly to learn more! Ready to brush off the keyboard and start improving your writing skills? Start with English Grammar and Style from UQx. This 8-week course is designed to help you learn how to identify the roles and relationships of the words we use everyday. You will become an expert at critiquing and editing your own work. With a new found mastery of grammatical concepts, you'll feel more confident than ever whether you are writing your next proposal at the office, polishing your resume, or crafting your next essay at school! Just in time for the start of the fall semester, UC BerkeleyX is offering its popular writing series– an edX learner favorite- starting with How to Write an Essay. In this course, you'll learn how to write effectively and tackle your thesis, introduction and conclusion without breaking a sweat. Once your essay writing skills are on point, mark your calendar for the next two writing courses from UC BerkeleyX: English Grammar and Essay Writing (January 2016) and Academic and Business Writing (April 2016) to complete the entire series. Read more, write better. "If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that." -Stephen King The best writers are often the most well read! Many famous writers attribute their writing skills to their devotion to reading everything from the classics to the daily newspaper. To log more weekly reading hours, check out UC BerkeleyX's next "Book Club" course, "Dracula" by Stoker starting August 3rd. If you are looking for a unique course to fuel your fall reading schedule, bookmark HarvardX's The History of the Book in 17th and 18th Century Europe and continue to build your literary repertoire, while also understanding how the books that have become so commonplace today were originally created and used. With these courses under your belt, you will improve your reading and writing skills. Stay tuned for additional Back to School blog posts, and join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter using hashtag #BacktoSchool!
